Sensemaking

The Human-Document Interaction Area (HDI) builds and studies sensemaking systems. Sensemaking is the process of finding and using information for a purpose.

Research Program

HDI uses multi-disciplinary approaches to address core problems in sensemaking. Sensemaking systems couple sources of information with analytic systems and systems for visualizing, organizing, and annotating findings. Building sensemaking systems generally requires substantial technology integration. Contributing fields include human-computer interfaces, linguistics, information retrieval, data mining, and distributed systems. HDI is part of the Information Sciences and Technologies Laboratory, and carries out joint projects with other research groups that specialize in user interface research, symbolic and quantitative analysis of natural language, and document image analysis.

Our research includes building and evaluating server-side systems for retrieving and analyzing information collections and client-side systems that support sensemakers in their interactive work. Current projects in HDI include zooming workspaces for organizing information, systems for making sense of email collections, web-based systems for information sharing, and systems for finding and classifying documents and extracting information.
